SPECIAL FOCUS AREAS

Warnbro Community High School supports several special focus curriculum areas. These are The Arts, The Environment, and Technology.

As the school develops and expands special focus programs are being offered for swimming in the Health and Physical Education learning area and Mathematics.

The special focus status of these courses represents a culmination of expertise and facilities offered within the school. To support student development in these focus areas areas the school offers scholarships. The scholarships are advertised on an annual basis through the press and local schools.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING (VET) COURSES

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/RECREATION
Students completing this course work towards a Certificate II in Sport and Recreation and experience work in the health and recreation industry.  After secondary school students pursue further study or seek work as coaches, gym instructors and careers associated with the health and recreation industry.

COMMUNITY SERVICES (Child Care)
Students considering careers in this area can access this course through School Based Traineeships or as a generally enrolled student.  Demand from the community for students qualified in child care is high, ensuring excellent employment prospects.  Successful students receive Certificate II in Community Services.

RETAIL and SMALL BUSINESS
The Retail Course offers students the opportunity to complete their West Australian Certificate of Education (Secondary Graduation) while at the same time attaining competencies acquired in the work place and achieving academic recognition of the TAFE Retail Two Certificate.

Academic qualifications achieved at the end of year twelve:

  • Western Australian Certificate of Education (Secondary Graduation)
  • TAFE Retail Two Certificate

HOSPITALITY & TOURISM
This course provides vocational pathways to provide you with a broad awareness and understanding of the hospitality industry. You will develop the skills and knowledge required for commercial cookery, catering, computing and business management.

The course prepares students for a wide variety of courses at TAFE in the Hospitality Travel and Tourism sectors. Whilst the major focus of this course is catering, the course also covers hospitality management and tourism. Students who select this course are required to complete the following subjects. In addition to these subjects students will be given the opportunity to complete some national training modules.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICE
This course allows students to complete Certificate II Environmental Practice (TAFE) whilst completing Senior Science over Year 11 and 12.

Many industries require personnel to complete environment courses and students with the above qualification will be able to use the Certificate to their advantage when competing in the general job market.

Students wishing to pursue further environmental studies after leaving school will be able to build on the above course at TAFE.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Students completing courses in Business Information Technology (BIT), Personal Information Technology (PIT) and Information Systems will receive a fully accredited TAFE qualification "Certificate 1 and 2 Information Technology". This provides students with the opportunity to compete equally in the job market for further education with students from the TAFE sector.

Combined with Structured Work Based Learning (SWBL) this course allows students to maximise their entrance points for TAFE courses. Students need to ensure that remaining subject choices provide enough "breadth" to enhance their general education.

Jobs and training courses in the Information Technology area are undergoing significant growth and students completing the above courses are well placed to meet the demand.
