HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education Coaching Awareness & Development – Basketball
As part of Yr 12 PE Studies students coach a group of Yr 8 students in basketball for three weeks. Students focus on basic skills culminating in a round robin tournament.

Students will:

  • Demonstrate effective coaching skills and practices.
  • Have opportunity to select and implement team management methods
  • Demonstrate organisational skills related to a tournament.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills that will enhance learning environment of team.

Location: School
Cost: Nil

Soccer Program
Additional Soccer Coaching: developing individual and team understanding.
Individual skills: passing, shooting, control.
Team skills: possession, attack, defence, tactical formations.

Students will:

  • Develop a higher level of individual skill and awareness
  • Develop as a team player
  • Understand and learn how to apply tactics in different situations.

 
NEWS & EVENTS
for August 2008

Bronze Medallion – Outdoor Ed.
As part of the Yr 11 Outdoor Ed course students participated in Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion course. This course focused on life saving aspects in water environments.

Students will:

  • Gain certification for Royal Life Saving Society Bronze Medallion and associated water safety aspects.
  • Demonstrate competency in swimming strokes.
  • Identify and respond to simulated life threatening aquatic situations.

Location: School & Aqua Jetty

SMAC – Sports Medicine Awareness Course
As part of Y12 PE Studies Sports Injuries component students have the opportunity to attend the above workshop. The 3 hour workshop focuses on warm up, stretches and cool downs; strategies for preventing injuries and the immediate management of injuries.

Students will:

  • Identify factors that may result in sports injuries
  • Identify and demonstrate effective warm up, stretching and cool down methods
  • Identify and demonstrate effective ways of preventing injuries.
  • Demonstrate key aspects for immediate injury management.

Cost (if any): $8.00

First Aid – Health Studies
The St John Ambulance Senior First Aid course is incorporated into Year 11 Health Studies and gives students the opportunity to obtain a recognised qualification.

Students will:

  • Learn skills to recognise a sick or injured person using principles of First Aid
  • Gain St John Senior First Aid Certificate
  • Develop interpersonal skills by working in groups to manage first aid situations.

Certificiate II in Sport and Recreation
Incorporated into Yr 11 PE Studies, students are able to gain certificate II in Sport & Recreation during Yr 11 and Yr 12.

Students will:

  • Establish skills that will help them gain entry into the workforce.
  • Engage in Structured Workplace Learning to develop job specific skills related to the sport and recreation industry.

Outdoor Pursuits Camp – Yr 10 Option
Incorporated into the Year 10 Outdoor Pursuits is an overnight camp at Point Peron camp school. The camp offers students the opportunity to achieve higher levels in the areas of interpersonal skills and self management skills. Students are able to use skills developed throughout the year in a practical environment.

Students will:

  • Develop interpersonal skills by working in groups to strategize and overcome obstacles.
  • Increase communication skills in specific context i.e. Navigation, roping etc.
  • Improve leadership skills and abilities to work in groups through strategic/competitive games.
  • Develop specific outdoor pursuit skills such as roping, fishing, navigation etc.

VET - competency areas addressed

  • General administrative areas in sport and recreation.
  • First aid and emergency care.
  • Maintaining and providing of equipment.
  • Planning and conducting of sport and recreation sessions.
  • Promoting the sport and recreation industry.

 

SWL - students gain on-the-job training and skills to later equip them in the workplace.  SWL areas include:

  • Primary schools
  • Sporting venues/centres/gyms
  • Department of Sport & Recreation
  • Developmental programs ie. Peel Thunder, Rugby
  • Promoting the sport and recreation industry

Health Fair - Yr 12 Health Studies

As part of the Yr 12 course students work in groups to organise and deliver a Community Health Fair.  Students present on issues such as  mental illness, cancer, asthma, drugs and sexual health.  Students from within the school come and learn from the displays at the Health Fair.

Outside organisations are also encouraged to be part of the Health Fair.

 

Swimming Programme – Year 8, 9 & 10 students
The program involves intensive training and instruction in all aspects of swimming, aquatic sports and water safety. The program provides students with the opportunity to participate in aquatic activities such as swimming, lifesaving, snorkelling and water polo.

Students will:

  • Develop skills, strategies and an understanding of competition swimming.
  • Develop lifesaving techniques
