LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LOTE)
BAHASA INDONESIA
SELAMAT DATANG ke kelas Bahasa Indonesia!
Welcome to the Indonesian class! In this class students will be learning
how to speak, hear, understand, read and do simple writing in Indonesian.
In comparison to other languages, being able to communicate in Indonesian
is far easier than other languages. Everything taught is Romanised.
However, that does not mean that the students can learn without trying or
studying. It is still a language that requires students to learn different
habits {called social-cultural contexts} and pronunciations.
In high school it will be continuum from what they have learnt while at
Primary School. All students, being individuals, will obviously develop
and understand at different rates. It is expected that most students will
probably be able to use Indonesian at about a level three or four by the
end of Year 10, with some students achieving higher levels. This, of
course depends on the students ability to pursue further into language
learning.

As
stated in the above document the first three (3) strands or learning
outcomes described the different ways in the students will communicate
in the target language. The remainders are essential for effective
communication. The six learning outcomes are interrelated and cannot be
achieved in isolation, especially in the lower school.
Work
Practices
In order for the Indonesian classes to run smoothly and successfully, the
following work practices should be established in our classroom at all
times:
- Respect and correctly behave with all concerned
- Listen carefully to instructions given
- Work cooperatively will other students
- Establish good work practices
- At all times act in a mature and safe manner
- Complete all work given in class and homework given
Some important pointers when learning a second language:
- Each student will achieve at different levels
- Some students may stay in the same levels for two or three years.
This does not mean that they are not making any progress. In most
cases they are achieving and learning as they consolidate further in
that level so as to be able to move to the next level of their
learning ladder
- Support, motivation and having a positive attitude will play an
important part in the students ability to succeed in this language
- Please do ask your child to show off what he/she can do in
Indonesian. This will further encourage and nurture his/her ability to
use the language with confidence. This is a super morale booster and a
fantastic way for the whole family to learn some of the language.
- It must not be forgotten that your child is only exposed a couple
of hours of Indonesian, therefore it will take a bit more time for
them to master a language. Consistency will be needed!
I very much hope that your children will enjoy learning and
studying Bahasa Indonesia as much as the teachers will enjoy teaching
them.
